Biography
Susan Gurney is a geneticist by training, and currently applies these skills to understanding more about bacteriophage biology, and forensic science, working to identify unknown remains using mitochondrial DNA analysis. Susan has been a member of the teaching faculty in the Biology Department at Drexel University for 8 years, where she enjoys implementing active learning techniques within the classroom. For the past 5 years she has taught the SEA-PHAGES lab (as part of a national HHMI program), a discovery-based lab for the honors freshman biology students, which allows undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in real research to further our understanding of bacteriophages.

Engaging undergraduate students in scientific research promises substantial benefits, but it is not accessible to all students and is rarely implemented early in college education, when it will have the greatest impact. An inclusive Research Education Community (iREC) provides a centralized scientific and administrative infrastructure enabling engagement of large numbers of students at different types of institutions.
